Funding & Development

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland has a key role in developing and supporting the broadcasting sector in Ireland. There is currently a range of funding supports and initiatives in place, through which the BAI fulfils this role. The BAI’s development and support role continues to change and evolve, in tandem with the needs of the sector.

Sound & Vision 4 is a funding scheme for television and radio that provides funding in support of high quality programmes on Irish culture, heritage and experience, and programmes to improve adult literacy. More information is available here.

The BAI is committed to continually working in partnership with broadcasters and industry networks to address specific development needs that will enhance capacity in the sector.  Investment in learning and development helps broadcasters to respond to the interests and needs of Irish audiences. The Funding Scheme for the Archiving of Programme Material (“Archiving Scheme”) provides funding support for the development of an archiving culture in the Irish broadcasting sector which will contribute to the preservation of Ireland’s broadcasting heritage. The Scheme concerns programme material and advertisements broadcast in whole or in part, or recorded for broadcast, on radio and/or television. The BAI administered three funding rounds under the first Archiving Scheme, which expired in April 2016, (list of successful applicants). Following a review process, a second Archiving Scheme (“Archiving Scheme 2”) was developed and approved by the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment and launched in June 2018. When awarding sponsorship, the BAI considers it to be a contribution in money or in kind offered to an organisation, or individual, for the purposes of staging an event, providing a service or undertaking an activity which is in keeping with the BAI’s mission and objectives in return for a certain specified benefit. By offering the sponsorship support to such events/activities, the BAI contributes to the growth and continued development of the audiovisual industry in Ireland.  It is also an important tool that enables the BAI to communicate to, and engage with, a range of stakeholder groups. The Sponsorship Scheme is undertaken annually and the Authority considers and agrees the events and activities to be funded each year.
