BAI Launches 2013 Community Broadcasting Support Scheme

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (“BAI”) has today (10th April) launched its 2013 Community Broadcasting Support Scheme. This year, a total fund allocation of €30,000 is available for both the operation and funding of the scheme.

The aim of the scheme is to award funding, which enables community radio and television broadcasters to evaluate and review the operation and effectiveness of their services. Evaluations funded by the scheme can address either internal issues e.g. supporting a community station address organisational or governance/development issues or focus on external issues such as aiding a community broadcaster to look more closely at its target audiences within their franchise area.

This year, the Scheme requires applicants to underpin their evaluation with one or more of the strategic themes as set out in the BAI Sectoral Learning and Development Policy. The policy provides the framework to enable the BAI to strategically plan, support, measure and evaluate the continued growth of the broadcasting sector, through a variety of training and development activities and approaches within its statutory and strategic remit. The five strategic themes, which are detailed in the policy, capture the focus of Sectoral Learning and Development and stem from the BAI’s legislative and strategic requirements and following consultation with relevant stakeholders within the broadcasting sector.

Commenting on the launch of this year’s scheme, Michael O’Keeffe, BAI Chief Executive said: “Once again, the BAI is delighted to provide funding support to the community broadcasting sector through this Scheme.  We believe that it will be of great value to the successful applicants in the evaluation and development of their services.”

The scheme is operated by the BAI through its Sectoral Learning and Development function. The closing date for the submission of completed applications to the BAI is 10th May 2013.
