BAI announces funding of €642k through Sectoral Learning & Development and Sponsorship programmes for 2020

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has today (18.02.20) announced details of 2020 allocations under its Sectoral Learning & Development and Sponsorship funding initiatives. Funding of €642,000 has been approved by the BAI to support a range of activities, details of which are outlined below.
Sectoral Learning and Development
Central to the BAI’s work in sectoral development is the provision of funding to a range of industry networks to support their various learning and development activities. ln addition, the BAI offers support schemes for community broadcasters and temporary services. In partnership with experts in the sector, it also administers innovation schemes to support new training and learning initiatives. Through these activities, the BAI has created innovative and strategic alliances and promotes a culture of learning and development in the broadcasting sector.
The BAI plans to allocate €472,000 during 2020 to support initiatives in this area. Of this budget, €345,215 will be awarded to 17 industry and representative organisations under the Network Funding strand of the programme. Funding recipients include CRAOL (the representative body for community radio); Learning Waves (the training organisation for commercial radio broadcasters); Women in Film and Television Ireland (advocacy group); the Community Television Association; Screen Producers Ireland; the National Union of Journalists and Gréasán na Meán (Audio-visual producers with a focus on Irish).
Sponsorship Scheme
The primary objective of the BAI Sponsorship Scheme is to provide sponsorship funding to media-related events and activities, with the aim of raising awareness of the BAI and its work and contributing to the achievement of the BAI’s strategic objectives.
Having completed the assessment process, the BAI is awarding €98,000 in sponsorship funding to 14 successful applicants for 2020. Among the events and activities to receive sponsorship support are: The Celtic Media Festival, the Galway Film Fleadh and Fair, the Radharc Awards and the World Summit on Media for Children.
Additionally, the BAI will continue to fund seven other key events to the amount of €72,000 during 2020. These events were awarded multi-annual funding in 2018 and 2019 and include the IMRO Radio Awards, Dublin International Film Festival, the Hearsay International Audio Festival and the Oireachtais na Gaeilge awards.
Commenting on the funding allocations, BAI chief executive, Michael O’Keeffe said: “One of the objectives of the Sectoral Learning and Development Scheme is to support a culture of lifelong learning and development within the broadcasting industry, while the Sponsorship Scheme promotes greater public awareness of the work of the BAI. These programmes are central to our strategic objectives of enhancing innovation and sectoral sustainability and promoting diversity and plurality.
“The standard of applications for funding continues to be very high and we are pleased to be in a position to offer funding to a large number of applicants. We would like to wish all funding recipients every success with the various events and projects.”
