BAI allocates €4.42million towards the production of television and radio programmes

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (“BAI”) has today, 3rd April 2012, announced funding decisions from Round 13 of the Broadcasting Funding Scheme.

Round 13 of the Scheme accepted applications for both TV and Radio projects and a total of 163 applications were received.

A total of €4.42 million has been offered to broadcasters and independent producers to support the production of 50 Radio and 24 TV projects. When completed, the funded projects will be broadcast by a range of community, commercial and public service broadcasters across the country. All of the projects will explore the themes of Irish culture, heritage and experience.

Highlights of this announcement include:

  • 74 projects are being offered funding (50 Radio, 24 TV).
  • 51 of the projects will be broadcast by Community/Commercial broadcasters.
  • Package of funding includes 3 TV drama and 3 radio drama projects.
  • Other genres include: Documentary (54), Entertainment (9) and Education (5).
  • In terms of language, 12 of the funded projects are Irish/bi-lingual.

Speaking about the announcement, Michael O’Keeffe, Chief Executive of the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland said “The BAI is pleased to see such a diverse range of programmes, in terms of genre and formats, being offered funding by the Scheme. In this round the BAI accepted applications for both TV and Radio projects and this has worked well. The Authority considered the recommendations arising from the assessment process and ratified the allocation of extra funding over and above that planned in order to facilitate the production of these high quality projects in a timely manner”.

The package of recommendations was ratified by the Authority at its meeting on 2nd April. The BAI will now commence contract negotiations with all successful applicants. A full list of the projects being offered funding in this round is available here

The next closing date for the receipt of applications to the fund is 13th April 2012 at 12 noon. This round is open to both TV and Radio applications.
