BAI Culture Night 2013

culture night

On the 20th September, Dublin Culture Night, the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland will open its doors and present an evening celebrating all things audio and radio. The BAI Building at 2-5 Warrington Place, Dublin will be open between 5pm and 9pm.

Pop Up Museum – Open to all – no ticket necessary

For one night only the ground floor of the BAI will be transformed into a pop up museum of classic broadcasting memorabilia as we play host to the Hurdy Gurdy Museum from Howth.  With radio sets dating back to the turn of the 20th century, its curator Pat Herbert has been collecting radio sets since the 1950’s. Together with his dedicated team of radio-lovers, Pat will share with you just some of the magic and nostalgia of these pieces, from radio sets inspired by the French resistance of WW2 to the first FM Radio set in Ireland.

You can find out more information on the Hurdy Gurdy Museum here.

Sounds Alive – Ticketed event commencing at 7pm (duration 1 hour)

Hosted by documentary maker Julien Clancy, Sounds Alive is a unique listening event where audiences are invited into a darkened room for an evening of curated sound stories from the radio, the internet and beyond. This year, story lovers will be invited to take a trip back in time as we explore the sound archives of the National Folklore Collection which boasts over 10,000 hours of stories, songs and memories spanning over a century of Irish history. As well as hearing these recordings, we’ll also see how they were captured on some of the earliest recording devices, the wax-cylinder recorders, the oldest of which date back to 1897. We’ll be joined by Sound Archivist, Anna Bale as well as some very special guests on the night for what’s sure to be a magical evening celebrating some of Ireland’s earliest sound stories.
