Members of the public have up to Thursday, 31st May to make submissions to the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s (BAI) public consultation on the Draft Children’s and General Commercial Communications Codes.
The consultation deals with the rules to be applied to the promotion on Irish television and radio of food and drink that are high in fat, salt and sugar (HFSS). In particular, the consultation is concerned with how HFSS food and drink should be promoted to children.
The new Draft Codes have been developed under the BAI’s obligations as set out in the Broadcasting Act 2009.
The Chief Executive of the BAI, Michael O’Keeffe said: “This is an important issue that has generated a lot of debate, but we are very anxious to hear the views of members of the public. The consultation process provides the public with a unique opportunity to have their say. All submissions made will be carefully considered by the Authority before making final decisions on the Codes over the next few months.
“I would urge members of the public who have strong views on the issues dealt with in the Draft Codes to make a submission before the closing date of 31st May,” he added.
