BAI announces funding of €7 million for the production of Television Programmes
The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), today (30th June), announced the latest funding decisions of Sound & Vision II – the Broadcasting Funding Scheme.
Grants totaling €7 million approximately have been awarded, in principle, to support the production of 38 television projects – all exploring the themes of Irish Culture, Heritage and Experience. This is the first round of television funding to be approved by the BAI, which was established in October 2009, and the ninth round of television funding to be operated since the commencement of the Broadcasting Fund in 2006.
Programmes being offered funding include a variety of documentaries, drama, adult literacy and children’s programmes (animation). Thirteen Irish language and bi-lingual projects account for approximately €2.5 million of the total recommended. The funding was approved, in principle, by the Authority at its meeting on 28th June following the consideration of recommendations from the assessment process which involved the input of industry and thematic experts. In total, 106 applications were received by the Authority in April requesting grants of €22.6 million. The BAI will now begin the process of contract negotiations with all successful applicants.
Speaking about the announcement, Michael O’Keeffe, Chief Executive of the BAI said: “The Broadcasting Fund remains an important source of funding for the broadcasting sector, particularly the independent production sector. The quality of the applications continues to improve and the diversity of content proposed is increasing. The BAI looks forward to the production and broadcast of these programmes which we are confident will be enjoyed by a wide range of television viewers in Ireland.”
