BAI Announces funding of 956,000 for the production of Radio Programmes

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI), today 23rd February 2010, announced funding decisions for Round 9 Radio of Sound & Vision – The Broadcasting Funding Scheme.

Grants totalling €956,000 have been awarded to support the production of 88 radio projects. All the funded programmes will explore the themes of Irish culture, heritage and experience.

While documentary programmes account for the highest amount of funding being offered, the genres of radio drama, children’s programming and education programmes also figure strongly. €146,000 of the total amount has been awarded to Irish language/bi-lingual radio programmes. When completed, the funded programmes will be broadcast on 40 different radio stations throughout the country. A list of the recommended projects is available on the BAI website: www.bai.ie.

The grant awards were approved by the Authority at its meeting on 22nd February following the consideration of recommendations made by assessment panels. The panels are comprised of external experts from the radio sector as well as subject experts from the relevant thematic areas and BAI staff members. A total of 239 applications were received requesting total grants of €3.1million. The BAI will now begin the process of contract negotiations with all successful applicants.
